What is IPO GMP (Grey Market Premium)?

IPO GMP (Grey Market Premium) is the difference between the unofficial grey market price and the IPO issue price, expressed in rupees per share. Grey market refers to an informal, unregulated trading network where IPO shares and application forms are bought and sold before the official listing on NSE/BSE.

For example, if an IPO is priced at ₹500 and the GMP is ₹75, the expected listing price based on grey market activity would be approximately ₹575 — a 15% premium over the issue price.

How GMP Is Calculated

Expected Listing Price = Issue Price + GMP

GMP % = (GMP ÷ Issue Price) × 100

Example: Issue ₹400 + GMP ₹60 → Expected ₹460 (+15%)

Why GMP Is Unreliable

  • GMP can be artificially inflated by operators to create FOMO
  • Grey market prices often collapse on listing day due to profit booking
  • Research shows GMP has only 40-60% accuracy as a listing predictor
  • No regulatory oversight — no recourse if you are misled
  • Applying in grey market carries legal risk (SEBI prohibits grey market trading)

Important: IPOFins displays GMP for informational purposes only. We do not participate in, recommend, or endorse grey market trading. Apply through your official broker (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox) using the ASBA/UPI process only.

Frequently Asked Questions — IPO GMP

What is IPO GMP (Grey Market Premium)?

GMP is the unofficial price premium at which IPO shares trade in the grey market before listing. A GMP of ₹30 on a ₹100 IPO means the grey market expects listing at ~₹130. It is NOT regulated by SEBI and should be used only as a rough sentiment indicator.

Is IPO GMP reliable for predicting listing price?

No — GMP has only about 40-60% accuracy. High QIB subscription (institutional demand), strong fundamentals, and sector tailwinds are better predictors. GMP can be manipulated. Never apply based on GMP alone.

What does positive vs negative GMP mean?

Positive GMP = grey market expects listing above issue price. Negative GMP = expected listing below issue price. A high positive GMP (50%+) may indicate speculative bubble; a negative GMP is a warning sign of weak demand.

Where does IPOFins get GMP data?

GMP data on IPOFins is community-sourced and manually updated. It is clearly labeled as unofficial. We cross-reference multiple grey market sources but cannot guarantee accuracy. The official subscription data shown alongside GMP is from NSE/BSE filings.

Should I apply for an IPO based on GMP?

No. Use GMP as one sentiment indicator only. Always check: QIB subscription (most important), company financials in DRHP, valuation vs peers, sector outlook, and IPOFins score. Apply only through your official SEBI-registered broker via UPI/ASBA.

Is grey market trading legal in India?

Grey market trading in IPO shares/allotments is not explicitly prohibited but operates in a legal grey area. SEBI has warned investors against participating. There is no regulatory protection for grey market losses. Stick to official post-listing trading on NSE/BSE.
